About 30 members of the local nonprofit community attended last year's seminar on preparedness for an active-shooter incident. Businesses of all kinds are welcome to attend this year's event, on January 31.

On Feb. 18 of 2018, Sylvia Group for the first time hosted an Education Series event on a sensitive topic we felt compelled to address: active-shooter scenarios.
The previous year had been the deadliest year for mass shootings in modern U.S. history, with 112 people killed and 531 wounded in active-shooter incidents. The deadliest attacks: in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, when a lone gunman killed 58 and wounded 546 others; and in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Nov. 5, when a single attacker fatally shot 26 and wounded 20 more.
We planned our seminar with some reluctance, wary of appearing to exploit such horrific tragedies. But the response to our invitation confirmed what we believed — that business leaders would recognize the event as an important opportunity.
About 30 people attended the seminar, which we had promoted primarily to local nonprofit organizations, and many of them graciously thanked us after the seminar concluded. Our featured presenter, Gabriel Bergeron of the Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY), had provided them with valuable information, insights and resources, and they left feeling better equipped to respond should the once unthinkable actually occur in their workplace.
One day later, a former student at Stoneman Douglas High School entered a building on its Parkland, FL, campus and opened fire. By the time he walked out minutes later, 17 were dead and 14 others wounded. Once again, the nation reacted with a mix of horror, revulsion and anger.
Here on the SouthCoast, some of the people who had attended our seminar felt compelled to contact us to share their grief, to thank us again for providing a sadly necessary service ... and to suggest that we offer it again.
We're doing just that. On Thursday, Jan. 31, Gabriel Bergeron will return to our Dartmouth offices for "Responding to an Active-Shooter Incident." The seminar will run from 8:30-10 a.m. Topics will include:
- an overview of the challenges inherent in violent intruder exposures;
- case studies of active-shooter events and traditional lockdowns;
- a conceptual discussion of proactive approaches;
- available resources for protection and preparation.
Seminar sign-in and continental breakfast will begin at 8 a.m., and Gabe's presentation will conclude with a Q&A session.
If you have questions regarding your insurance coverage, including what you need to cover an active-shooter incident, Sylvia Group agents will be available to answer them. We work with multiple companies that offer specialized workplace coverage, including PHLY, which has a program specifically designed for protection from damages resulting from workplace violence.
