I used to consider it strange to hear someone describe the experience of winning an award as "humbling." Doesn't winning an award typically boost one's ego, or at least a validate a positive self image? How is that humbling?
But after accepting an award last week for being Best of the Best for SouthCoast Insurance, I get it. The experience my fellow Sylvia Group representatives and I had at the SouthCoast Media event last Thursday night was, indeed, humbling for all of us.
First and foremost, we recognized couldn't have won the award without our clients — especially those who voted for us. The reason we're in business, after all, is that people throughout the SouthCoast and beyond have entrusted us with protecting them, the people they care about, their homes, their autos, their businesses and more for close to 70 years. Without the trust of our clients, there would be no Sylvia Group.
In addition, being honored along with many other outstanding SouthCoast businesses — including a dozen clients who were voted best at what they do — underscored the fact that we're far from alone in delivering the region superior products and services. Being among the region's best requires the highest of standards. Remaining there, we realize, requires setting them even higher and working even harder.
Thankfully, we have a team of insurance, benefits and financial services professionals who are constantly searching for new and better ways to serve our clients — another reason Thursday night was so humbling. While the relative few of us who were fortunate enough to attend the event enjoyed the celebration, we couldn't help but think about all the amazing Sylvia Group colleagues who not only shared in the Best of the Best for SouthCoast insurance award but also helped us place among the top three for "Place to Work."
Visiting family out of state last week, Sylvia Group President and CEO Maureen Sylvia Armstrong was unable to attend the event, but, as usual, she came up with the words to fit the occasion:
"I am beyond proud of the incredible group of professionals with whom I work. I could not be there in person, but I was there in spirit. Many thanks to all of our clients who voted for us."
OK, so "humbling" isn't the only word to describe Thursday night; "gratifying" works pretty well, too. And what made the event all the more gratifying was celebrating along with those 12 business clients who also took home first-place awards, and with more than a dozen other businesses we insure who placed among the top three. While those businesses deserve 100 percent of the credit for their success, it's gratifying to know that Sylvia Group has helped them protect themselves and their employees with carefully designed, cost-efficient insurance, employee benefits and financial service programs.
Congratulations to them and the rest of the SouthCoast Media Best of the Best winners. And thank you to all our clients for recognizing us as Best of the Best for SouthCoast Insurance.
