Vice President-Financial Services and Benefits
If an injury suffered off the job kept you out of work for an extended period, how long would you be able to pay your mortgage or rent? How about your car payments? Your children's tuition or your own student loans?
Expenses such as these are among the reasons disability insurance is important for you and your family.
Only those injured on the job are eligible for workers' compensation, and the vast majority of disabilities originate outside of work, which makes them uncovered by workers' compensation insurance. Social Security payments may help in some instances, but those are rare, and for the relative few who are eligible, the average benefit is limited.
The only reliable protection in the case of a non-work injury or illness that keeps you off the job for an extended period is disability insurance.
The organization Life Happens offers an excellent two-minute video explaining why disability insurance is necessary for you and your family. To view the video, click on the image at left.
As National Public Radio (NPR) reported in 2017: "Many long-term-disability claims are for chronic problems such as cancer and musculoskeletal conditions. According to the Council for Disability Awareness, the average duration of a claim is nearly three years — 34.6 months. Not everyone has savings to support them through that time."
Disability insurance is essential protection for anyone with significant financial obligations. If you'd like to discuss your coverage needs and options, I'd love to hear from you.
