No one enjoys family discussions about death and disability, but to protect the future of those you care about most, talking about those topics is something you have to do. Similarly, no one enjoys paying for life insurance or disability insurance, but to provide the kind of protection you're certain to determine your family needs, life and disability policies are essential investments.

Before having that talk with your family, ask yourself these questions:

If I were to die, or if I were to sustain an injury or illness that prevented me from working for a prolonged period of time, would my family be able to maintain its lifestyle and pay its bills?

What are my family's long-term financial obligations, and how much money will be necessary to meet them?

Death, of course, is inevitable, and disability may be far more likely than you think. According to the Social Security Administration, 1 in 4 people in their 20s will suffer disability prior to retirement age. Workers' compensation covers only accidents or illness resulting from one's job, it can take years to qualify for Social Security disability, and payments from Social Security, once they do arrive, are relatively modest. Considering all that, it's easy to see why experts advise having some form of disability insurance in addition to a whole- or term-life policy.
