Why an independent agent is best for bundling personal insurance

Taking advantage of an opportunity to save money by combining your home and auto insurance is a no-brainer, right? I mean, who wouldn't want to earn a discount by combining home and auto insurance on one policy?

It's a tempting option, to be sure ... and one I encourage my clients to explore. In fact, I've saved many clients hundreds of dollars by bundling home and auto policies — without compromising the quality of coverage —  and I'd welcome the opportunity to do the same for you.

But the truth is, not all bundling options are created equal, and not all insurance scenarios are exactly the same. There's a good chance bundling home and auto coverage — and possibly additional coverages — is a great cost-saving option for you, provided the bundle matches your circumstances and doesn't wind up actually raising your premium in the long run.

A 2018 post by the finance and investment website NerdWallet does a nice job of explaining How to Save by Bundling Home and Auto Insurance, including a concise chart explaining the pros and cons of bundling.

The piece concludes with three "tips on better bundling," among them this one (bold type added for emphasis):

  • Compare quotes for bundled policies from several insurers online or with an agent. An independent insurance agent can get prices from multiple companies. Agents who sell exclusively for one company can only offer discounts available with that insurer.
