Insurance for Drones

Does operating a drone require insurance?

In recent years, drones have become widely used in business and government. Affordable, fast and efficient, drones help organizations across all industries improve productivity in various scenarios, from rush-hour deliveries to background checks to commercial photography and video production.

As businesses realize the many benefits of drone technology, drone adoption will continue to grow exponentially.

Consumer drone sales are also rising as hobbyists purchase drones for recreational activities, including gaming.

Yet drone technology is not without its risks. These include:

  • privacy concerns
  • personal injury
  • property damage to others or damage to the drone itself
  • technological exposures, including theft and fraud.

To protect yourself against these risks, you or your business should include insurance for drones in your coverage program.

Commercial and Recreational Coverage

Sylvia Group’s programs of performance-based insurance offer coverage to both commercial and recreational drone operators. Because insurance for drones is evolving along with the technology, whether a drone used for recreational purposes is covered under a standard homeowners policy will vary from carrier to carrier. Commercial drones are excluded under all standard business insurance policies.

If you recently purchased a drone for recreational purposes or are uncertain of your coverage, this would be a good time to schedule a policy review with your insurance agent.

Our programs provide coverage in the following areas of risk:

Privacy is one of the most significant exposures faced by drone operators. Highly maneuverable, drones are usually equipped with remote-controlled cameras that can access any location. Consequently, drone use can result in breach of privacy. In the event of a privacy breach, coverage will protect you or your business from liability.
The speed and portability of drone technology can prove to be liabilities as well as benefits. Drones are easy and attractive targets to thieves, and the industry is still developing anti-theft protections for them. Coverage for drone theft takes the responsibility for replacing stolen drones out of your hands.
Businesses and hobbyists alike use drones to store sensitive data, which can be lost when a drone transmits information to a ground control station or stolen during a cyberattack. Data security coverage protects you or your business from liability for any lost or stolen data.
Mechanical failures and operation errors will likely cause drone crashes, which could result in casualty claims. You should make sure that you or your business is adequately covered in the event of property damage, damage to the drone itself or injury to a third party.
Drones are controlled via radio or wireless signals, which can expose them to GPS spoofing attacks: hijacking attempts in which an attacker deceives a drone operator by hacking the drone’s GPS signals and broadcasting incorrect coordinates. Coverage for spoofing attacks protects you or your business from liability for resultant damage.
For businesses, loss of or damage to a drone's cargo in a crash or emergency landing can prove more costly than the drone itself. Many businesses use drones to deliver products to customers or other businesses. Additionally, businesses in industries such as real estate and agriculture use drones equipped with special cameras to photograph property. Replacing such equipment or other cargo can be expensive. In the event of a crash or emergency landing, coverage will protect you or your business from liability for cargo loss or damage.

Testimonials

  • “I come in contact with many insurance brokers in the course of my practice – even more so with the advent of the Affordable Care Act requirements. Some are ill-prepared or still in denial. Others call me from the car on the way to a client meeting asking for a summary of the ACA in ten minutes. On the flip side of this coin is the Sylvia Group agency. Their clients are very fortunate to have a broker who is knowledgeable about employee benefit matters. The fact that Sylvia Group invited me, an ERISA lawyer, to conduct a live client seminar on the new ACA employer information reporting requirements indicates to me that they are engaged in the process and they care about their clients.”

    – RICHARD A. SZCZEBAK, Esq., RAS Law, P.C.

  • "Getting the right insurance to guard against risks is absolutely critical for nonprofits, as well as other businesses; dealing with a costly claim could force a nonprofit to shut down permanently. Going with the Sylvia Group, we made the right decision and have never looked back. They have a thorough knowledge of nonprofits, where risks can oftentimes be more complex. They have gotten to know our mix of services, evaluated our insurance needs and designed an insurance program around our specific insurance coverage needs — allowing us, on a tight budget, to purchase the right amount and type of insurance at the best value. Sylvia Group staff have built strong, personalized helping relationships with our staff. I can sleep at night knowing they make sure that our insurance policies are adequate to cover our risk exposures. I have recommended, without hesitation, the Sylvia Group to my colleagues working in both the nonprofit and for-profit arenas."
